Inspiration for Swimmers: “I’m going for a SANJ time!”

As coaches, how often do we hear:

“I must get a SANJ time!”
“I’m going for a Level 3!”

But how exactly do you swim for a SANJ time?
You don’t just wake up on race day and decide to swim faster.

Let’s see how a Top Swimmer thinks about these things.

Trust the Process Like Summer McIntosh

Swimmers and swim fans don’t need an introduction to Summer McIntosh.
All-world swimmer. Olympic champion. World record holder. Wildly versatile.

And when it comes to her mental approach, she keeps it remarkably simple:

“I’ll just try to keep improving and trust the process,” says McIntosh.
“Focus more on the process goals and step-by-step goals like working on my technique or working on my turns, rather than big goals.”

This mindset is powerful for a few reasons:

It keeps you grounded.
Instead of stressing about outcomes or future races, you stay present, right where your power lies: in this lap, this stroke, this set.

It gives you control.
Big goals are awesome, but they often lack daily action. Process goals give you something to do today that moves you closer.

It builds trust.
Trust in your training. Trust that showing up, focusing on details, and doing the work will carry you where you want to go.

So this weekend, and in the weeks ahead,

  • Work your process.
  • Fine-tune your turns.
  • Sharpen your skills.
  • Chase your goals down like they stole your kickboard.

See you in the water,
