The 200m butterfly has a reputation. Ask any competitive swimmer which event they would least want to race unprepared, and a significant number will say the 200 fly. It is physically brutal, technically demanding, and punishes pacing mistakes more severely than almost any other event in the sport.
It is also one of the most spectacular events to watch and, when you get it right, one of the most satisfying to race. A well-executed 200m butterfly, where your stroke holds together over all four lengths and your final 50 is faster than your third, is a genuine athletic achievement at any level.
Here is how to approach it, from your first attempt at the event through to what Leon Marchand’s extraordinary come-from-behind gold at Paris 2024 tells us about racing it at the highest level in the world.
What Makes the 200m Butterfly So Hard
The 200m butterfly is widely considered one of the most physically demanding events in competitive swimming, and the reasons are worth understanding before you think about how to race it.
Butterfly burns more energy per metre than any other stroke. The simultaneous arm recovery, the dolphin kick, and the undulation of the body all demand contributions from the shoulders, core, hips, and legs at the same time. There is no recovery phase in butterfly the way there is in breaststroke or backstroke. Every single stroke is a full-body effort.
This means that unlike the 200m freestyle or backstroke, where a slight drop in efficiency over the final 50 metres can be partially compensated for by digging deeper, in the 200m butterfly a breakdown in technique in the final stages creates a cascade. Your stroke shortens, your kick drops, your body position flattens, and your speed falls off a cliff. Every butterfly swimmer who has been in a 200 fly race knows exactly what that feels like.
The goal of everything in this post is to delay that moment, or better yet, prevent it entirely.
For Younger and Beginner Swimmers: Build the Foundations Before You Race It
The 200m butterfly is not an event most swimmers should race before they have a solid foundation in the stroke. Unlike the 200m freestyle or backstroke, where reasonable technique and fitness can get you through the distance, a 200m butterfly with poor stroke mechanics is a very long, very painful experience that can put younger swimmers off the event entirely.
If you are new to butterfly at age group level, the things worth getting right before you race the 200 are:
The kick: Butterfly is driven by two simultaneous dolphin kicks per stroke cycle. The timing is everything. Your first kick drives your arms forward into the entry. Your second kick drives your pull through. Swimmers who kick only once per stroke cycle, or whose kicks are out of time with their arms, are missing the engine that makes butterfly work. If your coach is spending time on your kick timing, it is because without it the 200m butterfly is nearly impossible to finish cleanly.
The undulation: Butterfly is not a flat stroke. Your body should move in a wave-like motion from chest through hips through legs. Swimmers who try to keep their hips still and just move their arms are creating resistance where they should be creating propulsion. Learn to move your whole body through the water, not just your upper half.
The breathing pattern: In the 100m butterfly, breathing every stroke is common in the second half. In the 200m, breathing pattern management is one of the most important tactical decisions you make. Most swimmers breathe every stroke from the start, which adds drag and slows the stroke slightly but is necessary over the longer distance. Some swimmers use a pattern of breathing every two strokes in the first 50 metres and switching to every stroke from the 100m mark. Find what works for your fitness level in training before you try it in a race.
On pacing for beginners: go out easier than you think you need to. The 200m butterfly is the event where going out too hard has the most severe consequences. If your third length feels completely unmanageable, you went out too hard. The race should feel controlled and sustainable through at least the first 100 metres.
Stroke Count in the 200m Butterfly: The Clearest Indicator of How Your Race Is Going
Stroke count in the 200m butterfly is one of the most honest and immediate indicators of how your race is unfolding. Unlike the 200m freestyle, where a rising stroke count might only cost you fractions of a second, in butterfly a rising stroke count typically means your stroke is shortening under fatigue, your undulation is flattening, and your speed is dropping significantly.
Research on elite butterfly swimmers shows that the best 200m butterfly performers maintain a stroke count between 17 and 20 strokes per 50 metres throughout the race. That consistency is not accidental. It reflects a level of technical efficiency and specific conditioning that allows the stroke to remain structurally intact even as the physical demands of the event increase.
For club swimmers, here is a practical benchmark system:
- Beginner age group: 22 to 28 strokes per 50m is common. Focus on kick timing and undulation before worrying about the number itself.
- Developing club swimmer: 19 to 23 strokes per 50m. Getting your count consistent across all four lengths is more important than the absolute number at this stage.
- Competitive club to national level: 17 to 21 strokes per 50m, with a target of no more than two additional strokes on the fourth 50m compared to the first.
In training, swim a full 200m butterfly and count your strokes on every length. If your count on length four is five or more strokes higher than on length one, your stroke is collapsing under fatigue. That is a specific training problem to address, not just a race day observation.
Breathing Pattern: The Tactical Decision That Shapes Your Whole Race
Breathing in butterfly is a topic that coaches and swimmers debate constantly, because it involves a genuine trade-off between oxygen supply and stroke efficiency. Every breath in butterfly requires you to lift your head, which temporarily disrupts your body position and adds a small amount of drag. In a two-length race that cost is manageable. In a four-length race it compounds.
Here is the general framework most coaches use for the 200m butterfly breathing pattern:
- First 50m: Breathe every two strokes. Your oxygen debt is manageable at this point and the reduced breathing frequency keeps your stroke cleaner and faster off the start.
- Second 50m: Transition to breathing every stroke, or maintain every two if you are comfortable. This is where most swimmers need to increase their breathing frequency as the effort builds.
- Third and fourth 50m: Breathe every stroke. Your body needs the oxygen and trying to restrict breathing at this point will cause your stroke to break down faster, not slower. Controlled, rhythmic breathing every stroke is better than gasping or rushing your breath.
The key word in all of this is controlled. Rushed, gasping breaths that throw your stroke timing off are worse than a slightly restricted breathing pattern. The breath should fit within your stroke rhythm, not interrupt it.
Underwater Dolphin Kicks: The Most Underutilised Asset in the 200 Fly
Elite butterfly swimmers consistently get 12 to 15 metres of underwater dolphin kicks off every wall. At age group and club level, most swimmers surface far earlier than this, often because their underwater kick is not strong enough to sustain meaningful speed past the 8 to 10 metre mark.
In a four-length race with three turns, this matters enormously. A swimmer who averages 13 metres off each wall versus a swimmer who averages 9 metres is gaining 4 metres of more efficient, faster swimming on every single length after the start. Over three turns, that is 12 metres of the race swum in the fastest possible position.
Research on elite 200m butterfly performers specifically identifies the turn at 150 metres as the most critical single moment in the race. By this point, fatigue is at its peak and most swimmers are losing significant distance off their underwater compared to the earlier turns. The swimmers who can hold their underwater distance at the 150 metre mark are the ones who finish the race with a genuinely fast final 50 rather than a survival lap.
In training, dedicate specific sets to underwater dolphin kicks off every wall, even when you are tired. Practising your underwaters at the end of a hard set specifically trains the 150 metre turn scenario.
The Third 50m: Where the 200m Butterfly Is Won or Lost
In every 200m event, the third 50m is the hardest segment. In butterfly, it is uniquely brutal. By the 100 metre mark, lactic acid is building, your shoulders are working hard, and your stroke wants to shorten. The turn at 150 metres comes at the absolute worst moment physically, and what you do in the 25 metres either side of it defines your race.
Olympic analysis of the 200m butterfly consistently shows that the swimmers who medal have a faster third 50 relative to their overall pace than the swimmers who do not. This might seem counterintuitive but it makes sense: the swimmers who have managed their first 100 metres correctly still have something to give at the 100 metre mark. The swimmers who went out too hard are already in survival mode.
Practically, this means the third 50m should feel hard but not catastrophic. If you are barely functioning at the 100 metre turn, your first 100 was too fast. If you feel like you have room to push at the 100 metre mark, your first 100 was probably about right.
What Leon Marchand’s Paris 2024 Gold Tells Us
The men’s 200m butterfly final at Paris 2024 produced one of the most dramatic individual performances of the entire Games. Leon Marchand of France won gold in an Olympic record of 1:51.21, beating Hungary’s Kristof Milak into silver at 1:51.75 and Canada’s Ilya Kharun to bronze at 1:52.80.
What makes Marchand’s race extraordinary from a coaching perspective is how he won it. Milak and Marchand led the race from the 15 metre mark onwards, remaining in the first two positions for the entire race. But Marchand was faster on every single turn and every single underwater throughout. His turn execution and underwater dolphin kicks were the decisive technical edge in a race between two of the most talented butterfly swimmers in the sport’s history.
Marchand delivered a superhuman final leg to ignite the French crowd at Paris La Defense Arena, powering past Milak in the closing metres to break the Olympic record that Milak himself had set in Tokyo. The margin was just 0.54 seconds, but the manner of the win was emphatic: Marchand built through the race, saved his best swimming for the final 50 metres, and executed his turns and underwaters better than anyone else in the field across all four lengths.
It was his second individual gold of the Paris Games, following his 400m individual medley gold earlier in the week, and he was not finished. Later that same evening he won the 200m breaststroke gold as well, completing one of the most extraordinary single-night performances in Olympic swimming history.
The lesson for every level of butterfly swimmer from Marchand’s 200m butterfly race is the same one that runs through every great 200m performance: turns and underwaters win races. His stroke was spectacular, but it was the consistency of his technical execution off every wall, maintained under maximum pressure in front of a home crowd, that made the difference.
On the women’s side, Canada’s Summer McIntosh won gold in 2:03.03, ahead of the United States’ Regan Smith in silver at 2:03.84 and China’s Zhang Yufei in bronze at 2:05.09. McIntosh was just 17 years old at the time of her victory, making her one of the youngest Olympic champions in the history of the event. Her race was notable for the exceptional consistency of her stroke across all four lengths, a technical quality that is rare at any age and remarkable at 17.
How to Train for a Better 200m Butterfly
The 200m butterfly demands a training programme built around three things: stroke-specific endurance, underwater dolphin kick strength, and race-pace repeatability. Here are some of the most effective sets:
- Stroke count sets: 8 x 50m butterfly on moderate rest, recording your stroke count on every rep. The goal is a consistent count from rep 1 through to rep 8. When your count starts climbing on the later reps, that is where your stroke endurance needs work.
- Underwater sets: 10 x pushoff and dolphin kick, targeting 12 to 15 metres on every rep. Do this at the end of a hard set, not just when you are fresh. Your underwaters need to be trained under fatigue to replicate the 150 metre turn scenario.
- Broken 200s: Swim a 200m butterfly broken into 4 x 50m with 10 seconds rest between each. Target your goal race splits on every 50. Gradually reduce the rest interval over time.
- Breathing pattern sets: Swim 4 x 100m butterfly using your planned race breathing pattern. If you plan to breathe every two strokes for the first 50 and every stroke from there, practise it until it becomes automatic.
- Third 50 simulation: Swim 100m butterfly at race effort, rest 10 seconds, then race a hard 50m. This specifically targets the most critical segment of the race and trains your body to produce quality butterfly when it is already under significant stress.
A Final Note
The 200m butterfly is the event that separates swimmers who have done the work from swimmers who have not. You cannot bluff your way through four lengths of butterfly. Your conditioning, your technique, and your pacing discipline are all visible in a way that is uniquely unforgiving.
But that is also what makes it worth racing. When it comes together, it is one of the most powerful feelings in competitive swimming.
