Riaan Campbell – Swimming Referee

“I love swimming as a sport and got involved as timekeeper 13 years ago to free up my wife to manage the kids during galas. I became a judge shortly thereafter for a few years until the opportunity arose to become Starter. I grabbed it with both hands and spent more than five years in this role. This is where I learned the refereeing skills from the experienced referees in Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KZN. Knowing and applying the rules properly is my highest priority, as well as making sure the gala which I’m responsible for runs smoothly and creates a favourable environment for swimmers to perform.”

“Refereeing is my hobby and a way of clearing my mind from my daytime job – a financial advisor with Citadel. My daughter, age 15, is dying to get back in the water after the lockdown, while the two older boys have stopped swimming competitively. What they’ve learned from their swimming years has helped shape them becoming adults.”

Once a referee, always a referee!
