CANA IV: Results Day 1 (Wednesday) – Team South Africa garner silverware in Lilongwe

The 2018 CANA Zone IV Junior Swimming Championships successfully kicked off in Lilongwe, Malawi today (Wednesday 21st March 2018) with the South African Swimming Team claiming eleven medals (four gold, four silver and three bronze).
Mzansi’s first gold medal came from 15 year old Ashton Volkwyn in the 50m breaststroke, touching the wall in a fast 36.73 ahead of Botswana’s Ruvarashe Gondo in 37.00 and Swaziland’s Nadia Volschank in 37.29.
In the 13-14 50m breaststroke, SA’s Faiyaz Adams and Keagon Mnyaka walked away with the gold and silver in 32.61 and 32.91, respectively, while the bronze went to Zambia’s Damien Shamambo in 33.23.
Faiyaz Adams also took home the silver in the 100m backstroke in 1:04.31, while team mate Lize-Marie Davidson was more than happy with the bronze in the 13-14 age group race with a time of 1:07.98.
During the 800m freestyle morning session, Davidson (14) scooped the silver medal in her respective age group event in 9:54.12, ahead of Mauritius’ Ines Gebert in 10:13.36 and behind Seychelles’ Therese Soukup in 9:43.46.
SA’s JP Seyffert (16) won the silver in the 15-16 age group 50m breaststroke category in 30.30 and went one better in the 100m backstroke to take the gold in 1:00.10.
South Africa’s Candice Clifton-Smith (13) bagged the bronze in the 13-14 age group 50m breaststroke, clocking 36.15, to Alicia Kok Shun’s 34.36 and Mia Phiri’s 36.12.
The South African quartet of Davidson, Clifton-Smith, Hannah Cromhout (13) and Danielle Ontong (14) concluded the opening day with a gold medal in the 200m medley relay with a time of 2:09.05, while in the men’s medley relay, Faiyaz Adams, Seyffert, Mnyaka and Rogan Shepherd (16) claimed the bronze in 1:52.07.
Tomorrow’s day 02 morning session will start at 09h00, with the afternoon session beginning at 14h00.
